Smart
Monitoring & Performance Management for Operational Efficiency and Reduced
TCO!
A Unique, Industry Dialog & Discourse Comprising
Industry Roundtables, Live Panels, and Interactions and Insights!
All Delivered Globally!
Inviting Every Telecom Practitioner Worldwide!
A
Initiative
Effective performance
management & monitoring is a key to achieving the service
provider’s goal of delivering excellent end-user experience, while lowering
total cost of ownership (TCO) and increasing revenue/profits. Ensuring good performance,
at the equipment, network, service, and application level, has become a de
facto requirement today for every operator (whether wireline, wireless, MSO,
OTT or data center) due to the substantial impact it has on their bottom line! The
purpose of this unique initiative is to facilitate dialog and
interaction between the operators (wireless, wired, MSO, over-the-top,
and data center players) and eco-system players (e.g. hardware
& system vendors, software providers, testing vendors, OSS/BSS vendors) to distill
the provider eco-system’s thinking on key issues in performance management.
The live panel took place on July 17, 2012 and was a resounding success, with registrants from 29+ nations, 75+
companies and all 6 inhabited continents! We had 9 experts in the panelist box, if you will, and some very
interesting Q+A as part of the panel, with questions (both written and real-time) coming from as far away as (22 nations!):
Australia, Canada, China, Finland, France, Guam, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel,
Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Portugal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, UK, and USA!
This intiative (and panel) is unique in several respects, not the least of which is that we share with the registrants the entire thought process emerging from Roundtables leading up to the Panel, and are also sharing important conclusions, open issues, and directions of future work with them and the community-at-large, so that we can continue to shine the spotlight on important service provider issues.
This benefits the entire eco-system! Operators and service providers have a chance to learn of open problems, vendor solutions, and new techniques and software out there. On the other hand, the rest of the eco-system players (vendors, software providers, OSS/BSS vendors, planning tool vendors, and integrators) learn of open service provider issues, and have a chance to take those ideas to the drawing board to come up with enhanced or tailored solutions to operator needs, thereby improving the state of the art, and advancing the industry!
We, therefore, invite you to be a part of this exclusive initiative by registering below. As a registered patron, you will have the privilege of receiving a series of insightful updates and communiques that build-up the stage to the panel, the panelists slides and excerpts from the panel, as well as follow-on discussions that emerged from the panel and the activities leading up to it. Plus, you'll have a chance to participate in this discourse, and add your perspective - whether you are a service provider, a vendor, a software provider, an integrator and the like.
In
the Roundtables, Dicussions and the On-line Panel, experts from the contributing companies
discussed and debated key questions in 4 focus areas:

End-to-End
Performance Monitoring & Management
·
What
is the goal of End-to-End performance monitoring &
management?
·
How
feasible is End-to-End performance monitoring – technically
and organizationally?
·
What
do we mean by “end-to-end” – since one operator’s “end” may be
different from anothers?
·
What
is the role of the system and hardware vendors, and the software
providers in resolving this end-to-end monitoring puzzle?
Application
(or End-User) Performance and It's Relationship to Network Performance
·
How
do application metrics get mapped to network metrics, such as
delay, jitter, loss, availability, & throughput? How do different
applications measure performance?
·
How
is monitoring used for eliminating problems between not just
networks, but between networks and applications?
·
What
are some of the challenges of troubleshooting applications, and
what that means for the networks involved?
·
What
do those challenges mean for the design of the hardware and software
of switching/routing gear, and of the higher-layer software?
Relationship
between the OTT Provider and Infrastructure Provider
·
What,
today, are the challenges of the middle-mile provider and why?
·
How
is performance monitoring coordinated between the OTT and infrastructure
provider?
·
How
do vendors and software providers support the speedy resolution of
problems, especially in converged networks, where one edge access
outage may affect many services?
·
What
advances in vendor hardware and provider software facilitate that?
End
Applications and Performance Management
·
How
may the application metrics and the performance areas be broken down into
multiple layers? What specifically can be done for voice and video
applications?
·
What
are advances in network performance monitoring? In application
performance monitoring?
·
Assuming
the end-application is the best judge of the network quality it perceives, how
can applications communicate with network elements (NEs) about performance
problems? What can NE’s do about this information?
·
How
can one intelligently identify which link/router in the network is
causing the most damage, and provide the operator a way to correct the
problem?
·
What
features of the systems and software deployed enable this identification?

Learning
about, establishing best-practices for, and gaining insights into the
techniques, tools, processes, methods, systems, products and services for
performance management and monitoring is indispensable for all operators today,
and provides direct benefits by helping them forge network management strategy
and commission software/systems for their networks to run efficiently. At the
same time, these issues are valuable for the eco-system players (hardware and
system vendors, software vendors, OSS/BSS providers, planning tool vendors,
testing gear companies) to understand, so that they may furnish software,
systems, and solutions to address operator needs.
This
crystallization of thinking on performance management, via Online and off-line
interactive, structured panels, plus writing and discussion on a number of
carrier-oriented forums is designed to raise the awareness of the industry
about open issues & needed solutions, and to provide valuable insight to
both carriers and eco-system players; insight that can be incorporated in their
processes and products, thereby improving service and carrier profitability,
benefiting the entire eco-system.

Why Would I be Missing A
Golden Opportunity if I Do Not Register?
Q1.
What is unique about this panel and initiative?
This
event has several distinguishing characteristics:
-
A
live, interactive event, where you get to hear from leaders from
companies that are at the forefront of telecom technology development and
deployment, and actually ask them questions in real-time.
-
Unlike
a one-off or a standalone panel, this event is designed to foster an
ongoing dialog within our community, with interested professionals
(including the panelists), which provides an unmatched brain trust
that all who participate will benefit from.
-
We
work up to the event through a series of discussions and discourses,
so each registrant gets to be part of that evolution of thought, and be deeply
engaged in the topics to be discussed on the live panel and beyond.
Q2.
What issues will be discussed in this discourse (panel, discussions, interactions)?
The
key issues are detailed in the introduction above. However, as mentioned, there
will be a whole slew of related issues, and discussions leading up to the panel and beyond
that each registered attendee will have access to that will significantly
enhance the Panel experience, and the benefits of participating in this initiative!
Q3.
How will I benefit from being involved in activities in this initiative?
Involvement
with this initiative (discussions, panels, interactions) is slated to provide multiple benefits to registrants:
-
Each
registered attendee will receive our communiques containing
writings, articles, blog posts, and lists of issues emerging from the discussions
ensuing between the experts as they work up to this panel and beyond. This is a great
resource to learn about solutions and refine your own thought process on this
issue.
-
Such
participation will allow you to participate in the discourse (and understand the discussions in the panel
and beyond) with a much better
perspective on the open problems, and gain a lot more out of attending
it (as opposed to attending in passing).
-
You
will learn information that can be directly applied to your strategy,
straight from the experts on both sides of the spectrum – the vendor
community and the operator community, as you can see from the list of over a
dozen companies that are contributing to this effort.
In
short, no matter where you sit in the telco ecosystem, the understanding you
will develop this way, and the knowledge gained by following the discourse and in
the 2 hours or so of the live panel, will be significantly more
than anything you would gain with a similar investment of time in
another panel, webinar, seminar, or presentation. That’s the value of this initiative!
Q4.
Why should I join as an attendee NOW?
If
this is a subject of interest to you (and it should be, if you’re doing
anything at all in the telecom world today!), you should register right away to
be plugged in to the discussion that is evolving even as we speak!
So,
you will receive notification of new discussions as they go up on our Forum,
and will have the opportunity to participate. Of course, given the focus of this
initiative (and having read the description), please contribute questions that are
uppermost in your mind or that you would like discussed, and we’ll do our best
to incorporate all of those issues in subsequent discussions on-line or off-line! .
Register

The emergence of IP/Ethernet technologies, the explosion of data and video traffic, the growth of mobile networks and 4G/LTE, and the emergence of enterprise cloud computing are all rapidly changing provider networks today. Our research showed that, in this environment, a fundamental constraint before operators (large or small, whether in the developed or developing world) is efficient network management.
We, therefore, launched this initiative to focus the eco-system’s attention on such key operator problems, to facilitate a dialog/discussion that would help to evolve solutions and strategies for operator’s. These would lower cost, enhance operator profitability, and thus benefit the entire eco-system. With our vantage point of helping players across the full telecom ecosystem (chip & semiconductor vendors, system vendors, operators & carriers, technology houses, and software/planning tool vendors) for a decade+, we are well-positioned to serve as the nucleus for such activity.
We are contributing our analysis and synthesis capabilities to the effort (as evidenced by our writings and communications on the subject), and will benefit from the valued opportunity to interface with, and learn from, our peers in the industry. More...

CTS is partnering with our two Carrier Ethernet transport platform vendors to deploy their respective software solutions for managing and monitoring performance. The weakness of this approach is the solutions are platform specific. We are, therefore, interested in helping our Carrier Ethernet transport platform vendors advance their performance management solutions, which will benefit all involved.
As CTS has been migrating from SONET-based TDM transport to Carrier Ethernet platforms, the performance of Ethernet Virtual Circuits is becoming increasingly important. The performance standards (IEEE 802.1ag and ITU-T Y.1731) and expectations for EVCs have been driven to a large extent by major carriers for LTE cell backhaul. We expect that, over time, performance management of Ethernet Virtual Circuits will become a base requirement. The tools for performance management are evolving with scope of the service deployment.
We hope to see our Carrier Ethernet transport platform vendors engage more fully in this community discussion. CTS Telecom is a small, emerging carrier, and represents a voice that is not always heard in such discussions.
Our objective is to encourage our Carrier Ethernet transport platform vendors to produce effective solutions for performance management that would otherwise be out of reach for smaller carriers. Many of the large-scale solutions require corresponding investment that is not practical for small providers. The emergence of next-generation transport services requires new software tool sets. Increasingly, these tools are becoming integral to the solutions offered by network hardware vendors. The quality and capability of these solutions is really improving, and moving from the domain of large, expensive solutions for large carriers to smaller carriers.

AOL participated in the panel on Smart Management for Robust Carrier Network Health and Reduced TCO organized by Dr. Vishal Sharma of Metanoia, Inc. at NANOG54 in San Diego, Feb. 2012. This panel was part of the Network Health Assessment industry initiative that Metanoia, Inc. has been spearheading, and looked closely at three different service providers and two vendors’ approaches to configuration management and auditing of networks, as a first step in network management.
AOL continues to participate in ongoing discussions on this subject, such as Metanoia, Inc.’s industry discourse on Smart Monitoring & Performance Management, which addresses the critical issue of performance management of networks, which is, in a sense, the next step in network management.
AOL believes these topics are vital of importance to any service provider, and the opportunity for related information exchange is a welcome one. AOL's content sites and products allow more than 250 million visitors around the world to access the best collection of journalists, artists and musicians on the web.

As a leading provider of solutions for application and network performance management, OPNET is very interested in the topics being discussed in this performance management panel. Through our work with global enterprise and service provider customers, we share the perspectives and challenges of the various players that are involved in delivering end-to-end application performance to provide the necessary end-user experience.
OPNET's products focus on monitoring and troubleshooting application performance, network performance, and understanding the relationship between applications and the underlying network infrastructure. Many performance management challenges are compounded by limited visibility resulting from scale, technology layers, and lack of coordination across administrative domains and information silos. Trends driving the expansion of mobile computing, cloud services, and IP video make the coordination among partners working to manage end-to-end performance a timely topic.
Through involvement in the panel, we will be part of the conversation with our eco-system partners to better understand how we can work together with network equipment vendors, system vendors, and operators to find solutions. We believe our customers will be able to directly relate to these topics and benefit from this open exchange.

The communication industry as we knew it is over – the lines between wireline, wireless, cable, alternative access providers, hosted providers has blurred and the world of co-opetition has officially arrived. It is a commonplace practice to see two mobile operators sharing the radio infrastructure and service providers start to compete with OTT providers by starting their own content based services. At the same time, the connectivity services are becoming commodity and service providers are adding full portfolio of application based products such as application aware networking, unified communication. This environment makes monitoring and troubleshooting the network and applications more complex. There has been progress made in the industry e.g. Metro Ethernet, by defining standards for services and embedded instrumentation.
Performance monitoring solutions have a critical role to play in this context, by providing visibility into the performance indicators such as latency, jitter and packet/frame loss at various transport and application layers. InfoVista is the leading provider of end-to-end service performance assurance software solutions for network and application services transported by all-IP networks.
InfoVista coverage includes all the way from radio networks (3G/LTE) to metro to IP/MPLS Core to the data centers including virtualized environments. The benefits achieved from InfoVista’s unified, convergent platform for application and network performance management provide investment protection and increased operational efficiency. Communication Service Providers (CSPs) will be able to extend the reach and usefulness of their existing network performance management processes and consolidate their tools. They’ll also be able to leverage personnel skill sets and break down time-consuming organizational barriers between traditionally separate domains and teams. Last, this unified network and application performance management can reduce or eliminate the integration costs between unrelated toolsets and aid acceleration of troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
